I think we all know, there really isn't any right or wrong way to do things as long as we are following the Spirit for our calling, the rules of Zion's Camp and our priesthood leaders direction! In that spirit, I would invite us to share our ideas and hopefully grow from each others experiences!

Camp Hike
Just wondering if any of you would be willing to share some ideas about your camp hike. We have tried the hikes around the camp but find them less then challenging - more like strolls through the woods. One year we drove all the campers to the near by state park and hiked the mountain - which was an amazing hike - but the logistics of getting all the girls safely there and back were a little tough...any ideas

The hikes we are going on this year are all at Pawtuckaway. All the hikes can be accessed from Reservation Rd. off of Rt 107 in Raymond (only about 5-10 min. from Zion's Camp). http://www.nhstateparks.org/uploads/pdf/PawtuckawayHikingMap2011_web.pdf (Here is the map to the park). These are more like real hikes and they have a 5 mile loop, a 3 mile loop and a hike to the fire tower that is not too far. It works out great with the certification for each year. We have a few ward camp directors that will help transport the girls back and forth from the hike. Each hike is a different length so we will take the 2nd years first (because they have a 5 miler) and then come and get the other years...you get the picture.
ReplyDelete4th years, YCLs and all leaders (ward and stake camp directors) arrive at camp on Monday morning. The 4th year girls this year will be backpacking from Zion's about 3 miles to a private property pond/grassy area (where our youth went through on Trek one year) where they will pitch tents and stay overnight and return the next morning in time to help check in the rest of the girls. Let me know if anyone would like that contact info to reserve a spot (no fee just a rental of a port-a-potty for $119 for the night). Our YCLs will be staying at camp and doing a low ropes course (put together by one of our leaders). It should be great leadership training for them.
Our 4th year girls stay back while the other years are on their hikes (lead by YCLs who are over their year) and they plan a first aid hike that is pretty realistic for the younger girls. This helps them pass off their organize and participate in hike for their certification. The younger girls hike along and come up to different "situations" that they have to help figure out what to do to help (ie. hypothermia-a girl may have blue lipstick on and their fingers may be blue...gash in the leg-ketchup used for blood). It is a great and fun way to teach first aid to the girls and gives the 4th years a chance to use their acting abilities. :)
